Biography

Dr. Ephrem Gebrehiwot is a distinguished veterinarian and academic leader who has dedicated his career to the intersection of animal health, public safety, and institutional development in Ethiopia. Born in Decha, Kaffa, Dr. Ephrem’s journey is rooted in a deep commitment to his community and the advancement of veterinary science. He currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Veterinary Public Health and the Coordinator for International Relations and Strategic Partnership-Project Affairs at Bonga University.
Dr. Ephrem earned both his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) in 2014 and his Master of Veterinary Public Health (MVPH) in 2025 from Jimma University. His research contributions focus on critical public health and agricultural issues. Currently, he serves as the Principal Investigator for the Bonga sheep breeding research project of Bonga University, a vital initiative for local agricultural sustainability. Looking forward, his research trajectory is focused on global health priorities, including One Health, zoonotic diseases, transboundary animal diseases, and the impacts of climate change on biological systems.
Before his transition to academia, Dr. Ephrem built a formidable reputation as a frontline veterinary clinician and leader in the Southwest Ethiopia region. From 2014 to 2020, he served as a Veterinarian and Animal Health Quarantine Team Leader for the Decha district in Kaffa zone. During this tenure, he was responsible for disease surveillance, animal welfare, public health, and quarantine protocols, ensuring the safety of local livestock and public. His technical proficiency was matched by his leadership with outstanding achievement for five consecutive years (2016–2020) in Decha district.
Beyond the classroom and laboratory, Dr. Ephrem has become a pillar of administrative excellence at Bonga University. He has stepped into vital leadership roles, including: Director of the Community Service Directorate, Head of the Business and Development Vice President Office and currently as Coordinator for International Relations and Strategic Partnership-Project Affairs at Bonga University.
